Contraindications for Micropigmentation

Micropigmentation procedures may not be suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions and circumstances can increase the risk of adverse outcomes or compromise results. A comprehensive health assessment is essential before treatment.

Main Contraindications

1. Skin Conditions

  • Psoriasis

  • Eczema

  • Purulent acne

  • Active herpes

  • Skin infections (fungal, bacterial, viral)

  • Excessively oily skin (sebum production may affect pigment durability)

2. Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended due to potential risks to the mother and child.

3. Autoimmune Diseases

  • Diabetes (especially Type 1) – impaired wound healing may increase infection risk

  • Lupus – heightened skin sensitivity and slower healing

  • Thyroid disorders – some medications may affect pigment retention

  • Blood coagulation disorders

4. Hemophilia & Anticoagulant Use

  • Easy bruising tendency

  • Use of blood-thinning medications (e.g., aspirin, warfarin) can lead to excessive bleeding

5. Allergies

  • To pigments, latex, anesthetics, or other substances used in the procedure

  • An allergy test is strongly recommended prior to treatment

6. Viral & Bacterial Infections

  • HIV

  • Hepatitis B & C

  • Active viral infections (e.g., flu) – can compromise immunity and increase complications

7. Cancer & Radiotherapy
Ongoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy makes the skin more sensitive and slows healing.

8. Tendency to Scar
Clients prone to hypertrophic or keloid scars may not be good candidates.

9. Inflammation or Irritation in the Treatment Area
Procedures should be postponed until the skin is fully healed.

10. Medications

  • Steroids – may suppress immunity and delay healing

  • Retinoids (e.g., Accutane) – avoid micropigmentation for at least 6 months after treatment

11. Recent Cosmetic Procedures
Avoid micropigmentation if chemical peels, dermabrasion, or other exfoliating treatments have recently been performed.

Common Side Effects

  • Redness & Swelling: Usually resolves within a few hours to days

  • Tenderness & Sensitivity: Temporary, often relieved with mild pain medication

  • Itching & Peeling: Part of the natural healing process – avoid scratching

  • Scabbing: Small scabs may form; allow them to fall off naturally

  • Color Changes: Pigment appears darker at first, then lightens as healing progresses

Recommendations Before a PMU Procedure

To ensure the best results and reduce risks, follow these guidelines:

  1. Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds for 2 weeks prior.

  2. Avoid exfoliation, chemical peels, dermabrasion, and AHA/BHA or retinol products for 1 week before.

  3. Stop anticoagulant medications (only with doctor’s approval) at least 48 hours before.

  4. Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours prior.

  5. Do not pluck, wax, or shape eyebrows for 1 week before the appointment.

  6. Inform your technician about your pain tolerance and discuss the use of local anesthetics.

PMU Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential for ensuring a smooth healing process and maintaining long-lasting results. Please follow these guidelines carefully:

Important Tips

  1. Avoid Water Contact (7–10 Days)
Do not excessively wet the treated area. Use a damp cotton pad to gently clean the surrounding skin.

  2. No Makeup or Cosmetics (First Week)
Avoid applying makeup or skincare products near the treated area to prevent irritation or infection.

  3. Limit Physical Activity (7–10 Days)
Refrain from exercise or activities that cause heavy sweating, as sweat can affect pigment retention.

  4. Avoid Heat & Moisture Exposure (2 Weeks)
Stay away from saunas, pools, jacuzzis, and tanning to reduce irritation and pigment fading.

  5. Do Not Pick or Scratch
Small scabs may form in the first few days. Allow them to fall off naturally to avoid disrupting pigment healing.

  6. Avoid Exfoliants (4 Weeks)
Do not use products containing acids (AHA/BHA), retinol, or other exfoliants until the skin has fully healed.

  7. Healing Process (4–6 Weeks)
The color may appear darker initially, then fade, and finally stabilize into the desired shade once healing is complete.

  8. Follow-Up Appointment (4–6 Weeks)
A touch-up session is recommended to refine results, as some pigment may not settle evenly during the first procedure.
